Top Tips for your Sutherland Shire Bathroom Renovation

Luxury bath and bathroom renovation in Sydney

If you are planning a bathroom renovation, you know it is not a small undertaking. Before you begin tearing up your bathroom tiling and removing the tub, it helps to get some recommendations from the pros! We have polled designers, contractors, and other experts to give you their best advice and insider tips, so you get every detail correctly.

Follow these tricks, so your Sutherland Shire bathroom truly shines

Tiling Recommendations

You have a few options for the tiles you will use, including:

Glazed or porcelain tiles: If you do not have plenty of time to clean your bathroom floor, choose glazed or porcelain tiles.

They are easy to care for and are a much better choice than limestone and other natural stone tiles. These porous options will only absorb spills and drips. Unless you ensure they are sealed vigilantly, your tiles will look stained in just a few years.

Textured tiles: If you aim to have a nonslip floor, you want to choose textured tiles. Other options include glazes that contain sand or matte finishes. Small tiles that have several grout lines are also excellent because they give better grip compared to large tiles.

Caulking

When it comes to choosing the caulk to use, select an acrylic formula because it is easier to remove or replace without needing harsh chemicals. A hybrid formula is also useful but make sure it can protect your bathroom from mildew for at least five years.

Sink Style

There is no perfect sink, but you can choose the one that best suits your requirements. For instance, a pedestal sink may be a fantastic option for your bathroom is if you have a small-scale room, such as a powder room. However, be aware that this type of sink does not provide hidden storage and deck space.

On the other hand, you may find vessel sinks more practical than a pedestal sink because the former simply sits above your counter. You will have enough room for storage, such as drawers, which you can place below it. The only problem is that it can be tough to clean this type of sink. Plus, many homeowners in Sutherland Shire think this sink does not offer enough usable space.

If you have adequate room, you can go for a sink with vanity. This type of sink will indeed take up lots of space, but one great thing about it is that it gives the most utility. As long as you provide it with sufficient clearance for pulling out drawers or opening your cabinet doors, there should not be any problem with it.

Countertops

Selecting the right countertop is crucial for bathroom renovations. You will find that you have plenty of options, including:

Natural Stone: This material is best for high-end baths. If you are quite vigilant when it comes to caring for your bathroom, you can choose natural stone for your countertops.

It provides natural beauty in each slab and allows you to under-mount your sink as well. If you opt for polished granite, it can resist stains and scratches. Note though that it should be sealed regularly.

If you choose the porous types, such as limestone or marble, they will stain if you spill cleaners without wiping them away quickly. Additionally, polished surfaces can show water or oil marks.

Resin-based: If you want your countertops to have unique dimensions or shapes, resin-based material is suitable for such a design. Whether you go for a solid surface (straight resin) or cultured marble, you can have countertops forming as one, seamless piece.

They can even include the sink, and you can select from a wide variety of colours. This material will not require sealing but may not offer the same beauty and upscale feel of natural stone.

Laminate: If you are on a tight budget or you want your remodelling project to finish as fast as possible, laminate countertops are a good idea. They are affordable and scratch-resistant.

You can find these counters in prefab slabs at many home centres, and you can see them in a variety of colours, textures, and finishes. Unfortunately, this type does not allow you to use under-mount sinks and may even delaminate over time.

Proper Ventilation

Every bathroom needs a fan, but many homeowners choose to add it later or even neglect it because they believe their bathroom does not require it. For your master bath, it pays to splurge on a unit that is ultra-quiet, so you do not wake up the other people in the house when you utilise the bathroom at night.

Ensure that the unit has enough power in case two or more people will use the showers back-to-back. You may also want to put it on a timer so it will run for about 20 minutes to get rid of steam once you are done showering.

Meanwhile, ventilation for a guest or family bath may require a mid-range model with low noise. It does not have to be ultra-silent but should have enough power. If you have kids in the house, you may want to spend extra for a unit with a humidity sensor. This way, you do not have to entirely rely on guests or kids to turn the power on.

If you have a powder room, installing a fan with a built-in light can be useful. You can save more money if you wire it to a switch so that the unit will turn on automatically.

Shower Repair Sydney

Shower faucets can have problems over time, including leaks. If your shower has this issue, it should be a part of your renovation task. The good news is that repairing a shower faucet that does not shut off is easy and can be done in an hour (or less using basic tools).

If your shower head is the problem, the solution is often to replace the old cartridge with a new one but make sure it is an identical type. Leaks can cost you tons of money on your water bill.

You can have a professional plumber to fix it. Often, the handle is simply turned too far from its off position, which then causes the leaks.

However, if water is still leaking even after you fix the handle, the next step is to turn off the valves, which may be located in your basement or bathroom. If you cannot find the water valves, you can turn off the main valve instead, which should be situated outside your home.

You can then remove the handle of the faucet using a screwdriver and then the cartridge. Install the new one and make sure the handle is turned off before proceeding.

If water still leaks, you will need to repair the shower faucet. Use pliers or a wrench and remove excess water from the tap. Replace the rubber gasket, which is found within the valve. Re-attach the faucet, and at this point, your shower should no longer leak.

Bathroom Checklist

Bathroom renovations need a lot of hard work, but if you are prepared, you should not encounter any problems. Here are some items to check before you carry out any repair or remodelling task:

Measure your space to make sure all fixtures will fit.
Find out where water valves are located so you will have no flooding issues when removing fixtures.

If necessary, have a backup bathroom while renovating.
Buy plastic sheeting if you will remove tiles and drywall and be sure to move any furniture out of the way of the trades.

If you are especially worried about new carpet or flooring, invest in some drop sheets and have these set up when the trades arrive, especially if it is a long way from the front door to your shower or bathroom for the renovation!
